Listen No. 13 - Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass) by The Rolling Stones
Record Number 13: Big Hits (High Tide and Green Grass)
Genre: Rock
Context: The first compilation album by the Stones, and released in 1966. Artwork and tracks differ across America and UK versions. I have the US edition, and so am missing out on hearing Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing in the Shadow (a 1966 UK hit).
Notable facts: Play With Fire is credited as being written by Nanker Phelge. Never heard of them before, I thought. It turns out that Nanker Phelge is a pseudonym for tracks written by the Stones as a group.
My favourite track: Play With Fire
What critics made of it: an unsurprising success. Bruce Eder said that the US edition (which went double platinum) is ‘still one of the most potent collections of singles that one can find…’
Listening to this inspired me to: get hold of Between the Buttons as I want to hear Have You Seen Your Mother as part of an album.
